Poker Hand Ranking, Rank Poker Hands

The poker hand ranking determines who the winner is of each poker hand in poker games. Rank poker hands with the help of the detailed description here below, from the best to weakest hand. The player who has the best combination of cards, using any combination of pocket cards and community cards, will be the winner accordin to the ranking. Each combination is illustrated by an example, where the following abbreviations are used: C – Clubs, D – Diamonds, H – Hearts, S – Spades; J – Jack, Q – Queen, K – King, A – Ace.

Royal Flush

This is straight from a ten to an ace with all five cards of the same suit. In this game all suits are ranked equally.

Straight Flush

This is any straight with all five cards of the same suit.

Four of a Kind

This is any four cards of the same rank. If two players have four of a Kind, the bigger fifth card (known as the kicker) decides whos hand wins the pot.

Full House

This is any three cards of the same rank together with any two cards of the same rank. Our example shows “Kings full of Queens” and it is a bigger full house in ranking than e.g. “Queens full of Kings.”

Flush

This is any five cards of the same suit (not consecutive). The highest card of the five determines the rank of the flush. Our example shows an Ace-high flush, which is the highest possible.

Straight

This is any five consecutive cards that are not all of the same suit (if they’re all of the same suit, it’s a straight flush, see above). Aces can count as either a high or a low card. Our example shows a Queen-high straight.

Three of a Kind

This is any three cards of the same rank. Our example shows three-of-a-kind Kings, with a 7 and a 10 as side cards.

Two Pair

This is any two cards of the same rank together with another two cards of the same rank. Our example shows Queens and Jacks. The higher pair of the two determines the rank of the two-pair. For example, Aces and Jacks beat Kings and Queens.

One Pair

This is any two cards of the same rank. Our example shows tens as a one pair hand in ranking.

High Card
